Why is rice so important in our World today?

The Inside Story

RICE HISTORY
Rice is a special type of grass that is also known as cereal. It has been grown in China for 5000 years and is known to be one of the oldest foods known to man.

Rice covers 81 000 000 hectares of the worlds surface and is the worlds largest and most important crop. Many people would die if it wasn't for rice and its nutrients. Rice is grown in India, Thailand, Indonesia, Spain, Brazil as well as many other countries.

The chinese used to do all the rice work by hand-preparing the land, sowing the seeds, growing the rice plant, harvesting and sheeling. Today, Asia still grows four fifths of the world's rice.

The first rice grown in Australlia was planted in the Northern Territory by the Chinese in the 1890's. The main rice-growing industry in Australia started in 1920. Today, Australian rice is usually prepared by machines instead.
