The Pirates of Penzance

MacGregor Musical 2004

"What better way to expose primary school children to Gilbert & Sullivan than with a fun show like Pirates? Whilst we changed the keys of some songs and adapted one or two more, basically the show was performed as written. Hopefully G & S would have approved and now the cast (who seemed to be having so much fun on the stage) will remember Pirates and continue to enjoy other G & S operettas or better still, become involved with them in future years." Sylvia

The Pirates of Penzance was directed by two of our staff, Sylvia van der Weyden and David Longton, with Judy and Rachel Paterson taking responsibilty for the superb costumes and the backdrop and Chantelle Kraudelt for the choreography. They were assisted by innumerable staff and parents in creating a wonderful performance.

Rehearsals were great but we didn't think we were going to make it to opening night...but we made it. Ashah I liked dressing up and putting makeup on and I really like acting. Michael My journey through the 4 nights was fantastic and a lot of fun. Jessica
Pirates was FANTASTIC. I really loved our costumes. It was like we stepped back in time for 2 hours. Somehow we pulled it all together (with a little help from Mrs Van, Mr Longton, Mr Metcalfe, Mrs Kraudelt, Mr and Mrs Cook and Mrs Paterson). Enara
I think it was a great opportunity to know what it's like to sing in front of hundreds of people. Teri
I liked the way I felt important but I didn't like the weekend rehearsals because I couldn't play! Jon

I enjoyed it - especially the costumes - they were wonderful. Every night we had to curl our hair and wear lots of makeup. Cristina

It was funny when I did a big sneeze in the middle of one of the songs and lots of peopple laughed. Shelley

It was extremely enjoyable. I loved putting on the makeup and trying on the beautifully designed costumes. Working with Mrs Van and Mr Longton was extremely fun and hilarious. Everyone was extremely excited before each performance and I loved being in the spotlight and entertaining the audience. This production will be a once in a lifetime memory forever! Eunice

Daniel (the Pirate King) was a great actor - and I liked his makeup.

I loved the musical. It was so fun!! Emma

I loved my costume. It had a pink shirt, green pants, an orange bandanna and a sparkly blue sash. Putting makeup on was terrible. Sunny
It was lots of fun. I made many new friends and had a really good time. Bradley
While we were performing I was really nervous and the make-up was really itchy. Tsz-Ching
It was funny and fun, fantastic and exciting. I loved doing the musical though on the first night I was really nervous. Paige
Being a cast member was scary at first but by Performance 4 all the butterflies were out of our stomachs. I've got one question: When are the auditions for next year's Musical? David
What a great musical "The Pirates of Penzance" was. It was a great experience and I will remember it forever. Shelley
When it came to opening night the nerves took over my body and I needed to go the toilet before every performance. I dreaded every time I had to get my hair done because it took forever. Ashah
It was a fun musical. To play a police officer you must have red lipstick cheeks and lots of makeup. Everyone loved the bobbies. The audience thought that we were really funny. When I was performing I accidentally dropped my baton. It was so embarrassing.
I think it was really good especially when the police are on because they were funny.

I liked the bit when the Sergeant says, "We charge you yield in Steve Tharenou's name" and all the pirates yield at once. Fei Fei

Being a police in the musical was a lot of fun and I hope I become a main character in the next 2 years. Cathy

I think being in the musical was better than winning a Gold Medal. Shelley
The best part of the show was the Megamix on the last night when the pirates forced Mr Metcalfe to come up on stage and join in and Mr tharenou joined in too. It was sooooooooo funny. Christie
I loved everything from the musical. Winnie
If anyone wants fun just tell them to go join the musical. It was a great experience acting and singing. Angelica
The four performances were brilliant. We had encores for all four nights with a standing ovation on Saturday. Mrs Van is a wonderful teacher and is always ready to pull more tricks from her sleeve. Sunny
I shared a lot of great memories with my friends. The musical was a great experience. Ashah
I thought the Pirates of Penzance was a great hit and the rehearsals were terrific. Catherine
