1930s

In this decade, clothing became more elegant: wider shoulders puffed sleeves and flowing dresses.

When a woman went out, she had to wear good glothes - a pair of gloves and a fur coat, or at least a coat with a fur collar.A lady's handbag would contain a stick of lipstick and powder.

Towards the end of the decade women became used to wearing trousers because of World War Two.

Underclothes included a bra, corset, bloomers and petticoat. A corset was worn to make a woman look slimmer.

In winter women would wear a gloves and fur coats ...

... and in summer would wear baggy trousers to the beach.

At this time, suspenders were introduced to help hold up stockings!

During this decade, women's skirt came to the mid calf, but little girls had dresses that stopped before the knee.
Teenage girls often made their own clothes because they were to expensive to buy. Cheap jewellery was bought at Coles and Woolworths.
